5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GIBBS SMITH

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GIBBS SMITH

Lareen Strong

1. SOME OF US WORK OUT OF A BARN

It’s true – and we love it! This barn has been a significant part of Gibbs Smith for nearly 50 years. What once held cows and other farm animals is now home to 13 offices and about a dozen employees!

The barn is located in Layton, Utah, has 2 floors and an attic stories to accommodate all of our lovely workers who frequent there, and has even hosted field trips as of recently! Anyone up for a Gibbs Smith Scavenger Hunt?

2. WE’RE 100% EMPLOYEE-OWNED

We’re proud to be 100% ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program). Giving employees shares in the company makes for a more unified team and promotes more productivity and pride throughout the company.

3. WE HAVE AN EDUCATION SEGMENT

Our education segment is composed of education leaders who publish state history and social studies textbooks and curriculum for K-12 schools.

Whether you’re in the market for books on state history, world history, supplemental resources, professional development, or leveled literacy stories, we’ve got it all. We aim to provide an authentic narrative paired with high-quality curriculum that inspires students to become informed and engaged in history.

4. WE ARE ANIMAL LOVERS

Like we mentioned above, animals are sort of in our history here at Gibbs Smith! We are currently the proud owners of 2 sheep named Morning Glory and Frannie, who have been here since they were just lambs. Our Frannie is around 8 years old, and Morning Glory, our 3-legged girl, is about 4.

We also have 7 cats at the moment, named: Cola, Misty, Stewart, Oliver, Miss Kitty, Tag, and Mr. Bojangles. Mr. Bojangles is our newest addition to the family and is just starting to warm up to people.

Though our chickens don’t have names, we do have 3 hens who lay eggs! One of them is a bantam and lays eggs pretty frequently, while the others lay primarily in the spring and take the summer off.

We also see a variety of wildlife who may not live here full-time, but we enjoy their company nonetheless! From raccoon families visiting our porch and herds of deer who freely roam the property, they all are welcome to come visit us on the farm!

5. OUR REMOTE EMPLOYEES MAKE UP 49% OF OUR STAFF

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve learned the importance of remote work. With an uptick in company growth while the world was seemingly upside down, we were able to expand our workforce to include individuals living in 26 states across the country!
